Aims of the Historypin Community and Education Programmes
A. Community Aims and Activities
AIM: To directly deliver our own local Historypin projects
Use the Reading pilot project (Jan ‘11-Jan ’12) and the range of other local test activities to develop the first version of a scalable model for direct delivery of local projects
Use formal evaluation of these pilot activities to provide evidence for its value across a range of issues
Establish target areas in key international territories for the development of partnerships and local projects
Develop joint project plans and proposals with main partners, made up of a combination of replicated features and a series of distinct localactivities
Reflect the core aims of our local activity, across all our key issues and audiences (e.g. digital inclusion and older people), in the local net of partners that we develop and maintain (e.g. Online Centres and care homes)
Use the direct delivery phase of local projects as the building blocks for long-term participation in communal archiving, by embedding sustainable commitments across the network of partners
AIM: To encourage and support independent local Historypin projects
Continue to expand and support the network of local organisations running their ownprojectsand work with them to gather evidence and case studies for a scalable model
Develop tools and resources that enable any local group or organisation in the world to run their own projects
Use these tools and resources as a way of turning interest into local commitments during major campaigns
Explore the potential for a local franchise model, which would allow local groups and organisations to establish structured, long-term Historypin projects and facilities
AIM: To give champions and volunteers a central role in local activity
Use all of our volunteer activities in 2011-12 to develop an initial set of scalable volunteer roles
Maintain a balance between different types of volunteer role: central (based at Historypin HQ), local (working in their own community or as part of directly delivered local projects) and remote (online)
Maintain a diverse range of opportunities that include a diverse range of skills and experience
Use major campaigns to inspire and support very large numbers of volunteers and celebrate their contribution
Use every opportunity to foster long-term commitments to the Historypin community from volunteers
AIM: To provide opportunities to young people for skills development, training and employment
To use our activities, centrally and locally, to provide new opportunities for young people to gain paid employment, either directly with Historypin and its partners, or indirectly through training opportunities
Work with partners to develop a model that can convert short-term roles, either paid or unpaid, into long-term paid roles, via the creation of new partnerships and income
Scale up this model, internationally, to establish Historypin as a major contributor to youth training and employment
AIM: To contribute to the quality of care and support for older people
To develop a model and special tools that make Historypin a valuable, therapeutic resource for those suffering from dementia and those working with this audience
To use all local activities to create and sustain new relationships between groups of older people in care and the rest of the community, based on mutual respect and enjoyment
To develop activities and tools to promote and support active ageing and celebrate the contribution of older people within communities
To create social networks for older people, remote and local, that provide opportunities to increase social connections, share an interest in history and feel part of activities that are valued by the rest of the community
B. Education Aims and Activities
AIM: To help teachers use Historypin as a teaching tool within primary/junior and secondary/senior school
Use 2011–2012 pilot activities to develop core teaching and learning approach for Historypin
Develop online teaching tools for schools to deliver curriculum units across relevant subjects via Historypin, in different territories and languages
Develop online teaching tools for schools to deliver whole year / whole school activities via Historypin
Develop online teaching tools for schools to deliver speaking and listening skills both in the classroom and in real life contexts
Develop offline resources that can complement these tools or replace them for schools with little or no online access or digital literacy
AIM: To inspire and support schools to take ownership of Historypin activity in their local community
Use 2011–2012 pilot activities to develop community event and community outreach models for schools, which can be scaled up and adapted to suit local and student needs
Develop tools and resources that help schools to use their space, facilities and equipment to run community events
Develop tools and resources that provide ideas, guidance and structure for community outreach activity
Provide support and training opportunities for teachers and students
Provide special mobile or loaned equipment that gives students and teachers unique experiences of Historypin content and participation, which they wouldn’t otherwise have
access to
To build positive inter-generational experiences into tools and resources for schools
Give schools special roles to play during major campaigns in their communities
AIM: To support undergraduate and postgraduate study and research across history, geography and other relevant disciplines
To work closely with University partners to develop a model for Historypin’s use in study and research
To develop tools that allow students to use Historypin within their work, across a range of disciplines and methods of study
To relate these tools to the specific needs of collaborative research
To enable Universities to work more closely with their local community
To establish Historypin as a credible platform for students and researchers to share work and make their outputs openly available and accessible
