The History of the Springfield College Softball Program

Ever wonder when the softball team was created at Springfield College? Ever wonder who created the program? Ever wondered who the four outstanding coaches that led the softball team to endless winning seasons? Well, it is time to find that out. Diane Potter started the softball team as an extramural squad in the 1963-1964 academic school year. The squad finished with a disappointing 0-2 record, but the team soon flourished as the years progressed. Coach Potter led the team to a 32 win streak at the beginning of the 1968 season (ended in 1970) and was noted as one of the most prolific coaches in the New England area throughout her amazing 21 years as head coach. Potter took the team to Holland to teach and compete in the 1971 season and had the honor of competing against the Holland national softball team that year. Furthermore, there were three other coaches that led the softball team to countless victories: Lynn Johnson, Kathy Mangano, and Julie Perrelli. These coaches have done a great job showcasing and producing talent for the Springfield College softball team. Coach Julie Perrelli is the current head coach and we wish her luck for many years to come! With the help of the community, more information will be gathered to showcase the SC softball team, please help! I would also like to take this time to thank Tracy Granozio for laying the groundwork for this tour. Without the help of Tracy, a lot of this would not be possible. Keep in mind that all information gathered is believed to be true and again, please help verify or add to any of the information that you are about to see. Tour created by Luke Darling with the help from Jeff Monseau (SC Archivist) and the rest of Dr. Mimi Murray’s Heritage and Values Class in the Spring of 2013! Enjoy the tour!!
