Historically Black Colleges and Universities

This collection of photographs of historically black colleges and universities was taken from the book An Era of Progress and Promise. An Era of Progress and Promise, is a culmination of the findings of the Clifton Conference -- which took place from 1901 to 1908 to discuss educational and religious opportunities available to African Americans. It was compiled by W. N. Hartshorn of Clifton, Massachusetts, to celebrate the "religious, moral, and educational development of the American Negro since his emancipation."
