State Library of New South Wales

State Library of New South Wales

The State Library of NSW is a dynamic cultural destination with a history dating back to 1826. Located on Macquarie Street, Sydney (next to Parliament House), the Library is regarded as one of the great libraries of the world with an unrivalled and ever-growing collection on the documentary heritage of Australia and life in NSW.

As well as books, manuscripts, maps, paintings, architectural plans, oral histories, relics and extensive online content, the Library holds more than one million photographs. From the earliest surviving photograph taken in Australia – in January 1845 – through to digital photographs taken last month, the Library’s photographic collections document with powerful clarity the way Australians have lived their lives over two centuries.
