Honoring the memory of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States, the Hayes family established a presidential library, the first in the United States in 1916. The Hayes Presidential Center's Manuscripts Division contains documentary material in four major collecting areas: Rutherford B. Hayes and the Hayes Family; the Gilded Age; Ohio History; the Great Lakes and Erie Islands. For almost a century, the Center actively has collected, preserved and made available for research its rich and diverse holdings.
