In 1881, streets across the UK were lit up by electric street lights for the first time and by 1921 there were more than 480 authorised electricity suppliers in England and Wales. Just a decade later, a national transmission had been established, forever transforming the way we live our lives and powering us towards the world we live in today.
Since mass electrification, the energy industry has been responsible for some remarkable moments in our nation’s history and this channel, created by npower in collaboration with Historypin, helps to shine a light on the life changing developments that have been made possible by the dedicated men and women working behind the scenes.
In the npower tours and collections below, you are invited to celebrate this interesting and little known history by browsing through memories, photos and experiences documented by those living and working at the heart of Britain’s power industry.
We have unearthed many photographs from the npower archive for this campaign and we hope lots of people will join in by contributing their own memories to the pictures in the below collections, but if you spot a photo on the website that you're not happy being displayed, please let us know at ourhistory@rwenpower.com
