In 1893 two carpenters named William Moore and Ernest Whittington formed a partnership and set up shop next to City Hall at 106 Douglas Street. By 1902 the business had expanded to a large mill and workshop at 159 Yates Street. Business continued to flourish and soon included their own Sawmill at Colwood. Moore & Whittington became prominent builders in Victoria and in addition to many residences they constructed the BAPCO Paint factory on Laurel Point.
The partners turned the business over to their sons who continued to grow their empire which at one point employed hundreds of workers. Two-thirds of their assets were sold off to BCFP (BC Forest Products) in the early 1960's. Moore & Whittington closed their last manufacturing plant on Bridge Street in 1977.
This collection will grow as I add more photos documenting the history of this once mighty local empire.
