1 August 1943
This is my Gran and Great Auntie Jenny working on the farm as part of the Women's Land Army during the Second World War in 1943. The majority of Land Girls already lived in the countryside, as my family did, and they were joined across the country by around 25,000 by women from London and the industrial cities of the north.
I spent a lot of time round old photos with my gran before she died, especially this one. Just after this was taken, a man drove past the field in his car and was so distracted by these two pretty Land Girls that he crashed into the ditch! I think my gran was secretly pleased to let me know how eye catching she was in her day! My gran and auntie are much missed and this lovely photo helps us keep them with us.
